CALL FOR ARTISTS

The Mount Pleasant Community Association (MPCA) is seeking proposals from Calgary-based professional and student artists to create a temporary work of public art in Horsy Park, located at 5th St and 29th Ave NW.

The proposed work of art should meet two key critieria: (1) it must attract people to the park, and (2) it must foster dialogue about re-use and sustainability by using low-impact materials, such as scraps from other projects, reclaimed materials, or items salvaged from nature (e.g. fallen branches, leaves). If the work is made of ephemeral materials, it must be designed so that it exists for at least 2 weeks before deteriorating naturally.

Proposals should also take into account the work’s public location and context. All works must be safe for public exhibition. Applicants are encouraged to visit the park in person to understand the space.

Entries will be judged by a volunteer jury consisting of an MPCA Board Member, two artists, and two members of the community. The jury will review proposals for safety, choice of materials, relationship of the work to the space, conceptual strength, artist’s ability to carry out the work, and aesthetic appeal.

The successful artist will be paid $2500 for the creation of the work. This amount includes the artist fee, materials, set-up and take down of the work, and any other costs associated with the creation and removal of the work.

Interested artists should submit the following items as a single PDF to grants@mpca.ca

A current CV

A brief statement (300 words) describing the work, its materials, and how it will engage the community in dialogues about sustainability

Drawings or images of the proposed work

A rough budget to support proposal feasibility

Deadline for proposals is April 1, at 11:59 pm.

The successful artist will be notified by April 9.

The project must be in place by April 22, 2021.

We thank all applicants for their proposals. Only the successful applicant will be notified.

Please send any questions to grants@mpca.ca

CALL FOR JURORS

The Mount Pleasant Community Association (MPCA) is seeking volunteer jurors to evaluate proposals for a temporary work of public art to be located in Horsy Park (5th St and 29th Ave NW).

We are seeking four volunteer jurors. Two of the jurors should be community members who live in or around Mount Pleasant, and who have an interest in art, sustainability, and public engagement. Two of the jurors should be professional artists who can evaluate the proposals in a critical context. These jurors should meet the definition of a professional artist, as defined by the Canada Council for the Arts (see https://canadacouncil.ca/glossary/professional-artist).

Jurors will be provided with digital copies of the proposals and evaluation critieria prior to meeting. Adjudication will occur virtually in the week of April 5, at a mututally agreeable time. Depending on the number of entries, it may be necessary to meet more than once. Jurors will be paid a small honorarium in recognition of their work. The winning artist must be selected by April 9.

Interested jurors should contact grants@mpca.ca, and identify themselves as a community member or artist. Please also include a brief statement about why you are interested in acting as a juror.

Applications will be accepted until April 1. Successful applicants will be notified by April 3.  We thank all applicants for their interest, but only successful candidates will be contacted.
